Henequen Placemat Mod. Mayapán

Made by the artisan communities of the Yucatan Peninsula under the standards of the World Fair Trade Organization. The Mayan backstrap loom is an ancient technique developed by the Mayan culture in the western mountains of Guatemala. The loom is held at two ends, one of which is the weaver's waist. It is practiced by Mayan women to weave colorful canvases, which become garments such as hipiles or decorative pieces for the home.
